Oatmeal of Alford in the Instant Pot

A mainstay of our Scottish imports, Oatmeal of Alford Pinhead Oatmeal has been one of those quintessential, staple products that stands the test of time.

This pinhead oatmeal is a less processed version of the better-known rolled oats and these hearty, steel-cut oats have always been gluten-free and grown organically, and it is now clearly labeled as such on the packaging! 

We recently experimented with making this natural and nutritious oatmeal in the Instant-Pot and we were quite pleased with the result. The beauty of the Instant-Pot is that you set it up, push the button and come back in 20 minutes for perfectly cooked oatmeal - no stirring and no pot to boil over. Instead of using the Instant-Pot's Porridge settings, which pressure cooks for 5 minutes, we found that cooking at high pressure for 7 minutes produces a satisfying texture, not too mushy or too firm.

Recipe for preparing Oatmeal of Alford in the Instant-Pot

  • 1 part Oatmeal of Alford
  • 3 parts Water (may substitute milk for more creamy consistency)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Cinnamon Stick (optional)

Add ingredients to Instant-Pot - seal and set for 7 mintues of cook time. Let the pressure release for 10 minutes and it is ready to eat.

While the oatmeal is always delicious with fresh or dried fruit and a little brown sugar, we have gotten on the savory oatmeal trend and are especially enjoying Oatmeal of Alford with toppings like poached eggs and sauteed greens! The possibilities are truly endless.
